Athena, identifié à Minerve dans la mythologie romaine, a été dépeinte comme ayant un tempérament calme, et se transformant lentement en colère. On dit d’elle qu’elle ne se battait que pour des causes justes, et jamais sans but. Dans la littérature Grecque ancienne, Athena est décrite comme la compagne astucieuse des héros et comme la Déesse patronne de l’effort héroïque. Athena tire probablement son nom de la ville d’Athènes, dont elle était la patronne. Dans le monde grec, elle était vénérée comme la protectrice de la ville.
Elle était la fille de Zeus, produite sans mère, de sorte qu’elle est née adulte en sortant du front de son père. Il existe une autre histoire selon laquelle Zeus a avalé Metis, la Déesse du conseil, alors qu’elle était enceinte d’Athena, de sorte qu’Athena est finalement sortie de Zeus. Étant l’enfant préféré de Zeus, elle avait un grand pouvoir. En tant que déesse de guerre, Athena ne pouvait être dominée par d’autres déesses, comme Aphrodite, et en tant que déesse du palais, elle ne pouvait être violée.
