Atlas, dans la mythologie Grecque, est le fils du Titan Iapetus et du Clymène Océanide et frère de Prométhée (créateur de l’humanité). Dans l’Odyssée d’Homère, il semble avoir été une créature marine qui soutenait les piliers qui séparaient le ciel de la terre. On pensait qu’ils reposaient dans la mer immédiatement au-delà de l’horizon le plus à l’ouest. Cependant, son nom a par la suite été transféré à une chaîne de montagnes dans le nord-ouest de l’Afrique.
Atlas fut par la suite représenté comme le roi de ce district, transformé en montagne rocheuse par le héros Persée, qui, pour le punir de son inhospitalité, lui montra la tête de la Gorgone, dont la vue transforma les hommes en pierre. Selon la Théogonie de Hesiod, Atlas fut l’un des Titans qui prit part à la guerre contre Zeus, pour laquelle il fut condamné à tenir en l’air le ciel. Dans de nombreuses œuvres d’art, il était représenté comme portant le ciel ou le globe céleste (dans l’art hellénistique et romain).
